Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris retires from international football

Hugo Lloris has decided to retire from international football.

The Tottenham captain's decision comes less than a month after France was defeated by Argentina in a six-goal thriller in the World Cup final.
Over a 14-year international career, the 36-year-old appeared 145 times for Les Bleus, winning the World Cup in 2018 and the UEFA Nations League in 2021.
Lloris announced his retirement in an interview with French outlet L'Equipe, emphasizing the importance of passing on the torch while naming his successor between the sticks.
"I've decided to end my international career with the feeling that I've given everything," the Spurs goalkeeper said.
"I believe it is critical to make this announcement now, two and a half months before the start of Euro qualifying.
"You must learn how to pass the hand at some point. I don't want to make it my own; I've always said and repeated that the France team does not belong to anyone, and we must all work together to ensure that this is the case, beginning with me.
"I've been thinking about it since the World Cup ended, but there's been something deep inside of me for maybe six months now that grew during the competition, leading me to make this decision," Lloris added.
"There comes a time when you must step back. I've always maintained that the French national team does not belong to a single person.
"There is a goalkeeper available [Mike Maignan], and I need a little more time for myself, my family, and my children. It's an honor to have been France's goalkeeper for 14 and a half seasons, but it's also mentally exhausting, and I'm hoping that taking some time off will allow me to continue playing at the highest level for a few more years.
"I'd rather go out on top, having helped France reach a World Cup final."
Lloris' contract at Tottenham expires in 18 months, and he has yet to sign an extension. Antonio Conte will be hoping that he and Lloris can win silverware this season, with Spurs now the Frenchman's primary focus.
